American Express (or AmEx) is a American multinational financial services corporation (part owned by the Berkshire Hathaway group). Ford Prefect always carries an American Express card as a means of making a 'bona fide' attempt to pay off bar bills, such as his endeavour at the Old Pink Dog Bar. When Arthur Dent was at Milliways, he expected to see an advertisement for American Express.
American Express is mentioned in:
- The Douglas Adams novels The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
- At the time the novels were written, this was one of the relatively few widely-known names in the credit card business in Britain.
